OPEN HEART STORY
West Australian Ballet
Choreographer: Alice Topp
Lighting/Design: Jon Buswell
Composer: Luke Howard
Open Heart Story is an impression of the life-giving muscle we often forget about until it fails us. Inspired by a collection of true stories of friends who fought, and lost, their own heart battles, Open Heart Story is an emotional dissection of the remarkable organ in our chest; beating, pumping, and at times, damaged.
Embracing the heart in all its fragility and rawness, from the ache caused by grief and trauma to the palpitations of fear and the burn of rage, Open Heart Story looks at the phenomena of the function of the heart, what keeps it beating and the moments our heart sits outside our chest.
Through a series of intimate stories, Open Heart Story takes us on a journey of when we see the heart at it’s most vulnerable. The title of the work echos an album by the composer Luke Howard. Together with the music and sets/lighting by Jon Buswell, the piece takes an inquisitive look at the heart, at the things that catch our breath to the words we never said, weaving a picture of the racing, pulsing, aching maker-of-pace that keeps us moving and receptive to all.
“Nobody has ever measured, not even poets, how much the heart can hold.”
